Cultivating Our Future, Rooted In Tradition

Welcome to Rocky Boy Food Sovereignty. We believe food sovereignty is about more than food security; it’s the right of people to define their own food systems, grounded in cultural traditions and ecological stewardship. We are committed to reconnecting our community in Box Elder, Montana, with traditional foods and foodways, healing from historical food loss, and building a sustainable local food economy.

Our Core Initiatives

Our programs are designed to empower our community in Box Elder, Montana, to reclaim and strengthen our food systems. We focus on education, traditional practices, and creating sustainable pathways for healthy, culturally relevant food. Each initiative supports our journey towards self-sufficiency and well-being.

Understanding Food Sovereignty

Food sovereignty is about more than food security. It’s about the right of people to define their own food systems — including what foods are grown, how they are produced and processed, and how they’re distributed — grounded in cultural traditions and ecological stewardship. Indigenous food sovereignty movements focus on reconnecting communities with traditional foods and foodways, healing from historical food loss and chronic disease, and building sustainable local food economies.

"Reconnecting with our foodways has brought strength and health back to our community."
